FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
My basement has cinderblock walls. Will Fortress Deep Seal work on it?
Concrete block walls made of cinderblock present a completely different challenge. Because of their porosity and the number of cracks and joints, additional materials are generally required to moisture proof them.
How do I know Fortress Deep Seal will soak into my concrete?
Splash a little water on it to see if it soaks in. If it does, then Fortress Deep Seal will, too. If previous waterproofers or paint prevent penetration, the old material must be removed first.
Should the concrete be wet or dry?
Fortress Deep Seal is best applied to damp concrete, although it will work as intended when applied to dry concrete. Shield Top Seal must be applied to dry concrete.
Can I apply in cold weather?
Do not apply if the surface temperature is below, or going to drop below, freezing within 6-8 hours after application. If a product freezes in the container, thaw it out completely and shake well before using; freezing will not harm the product.
How do I apply the products?
Roll, brush or spray any of the products. Use a 3/8" to 1/2" roller, or any pump sprayer (we recommend a fan tip, not a conical tip). See our detailed application instructions for each product.
How much area does a gallon cover?
Fortress Deep Seal and Shield Top Seal each cover 150-200 sq. ft. per gallon. PetraWood covers 100-150 sq. ft. per gallon.
Will I ever need to reapply Fortress Deep Seal?
No. Fortress Deep Seal is a one-time application, so you never need to reapply it.
Can I paint or coat over treated concrete?
Fortress Deep Seal does not put a film on the surface, so the surface stays bondable for paints, coatings and overlays. Shield Top Seal should not be used if the surface will later be painted or coated, because coatings will not stick to it without specific surface preparation.
Can I use PetraWood on my deck?
Yes. PetraWood is an internal wood sealer for exterior wood such as decks. Power wash the wood first, and give new wood time to dry out (two weeks in summer, up to 10 weeks in spring or fall). See PetraWood and how to apply.
