The Biggest Threat for Farmers

One of the biggest threats to farmers is the spread of disease. No type of farm, whether it's an animal farm or crop farm, is immune. This is why farmers recognize the necessity of keeping their equipment and facilities clean.

Perhaps the most threatened type of operation is the hog farm as pigs are particularly susceptible to disease. Many farmers will tell you a hog operation either stays clean or it goes under.

The cleaning of hog confinements consists of removing a number of contaminants including large amounts of hardened manure from concrete floors. That manure often has the consistency of concrete itself.

These factors are not specific to hog farms and exist across the country in breeding kennels, horse farms, dairies, veterinary and surgical clinics, and smaller private farms and ranches. In the northern regions, frozen contaminants pose quite a challenge when cleaning off cement floors.

Historically, veterinarians have described new barn syndrome as affecting the sows, growers and finishers. In sows, hip, ankle and hoof problems have been noted as being caused by the caustic nature of new concrete, causing a skin reaction on the bottom of the foot pads. Small cracks in the pad occurs allowing bacteria to enter into the animal's body causing joint infection in the knees, ankles and hips. With this lameness, producers suffer losses in terms of increased sow culling rate, breeding problems and other management difficulties.

In growing and finishing hogs, "New Barn Syndrome" has been reported to cause these same problems as well as tail biting, ear biting and lameness.
